Hello

Both of the cats, resting by a window. Miska is in a little box, Sasha is resting on the bottom shelf of a bookcase.
My two awesome cats.

Once again, a new blog format.

I am Ashley Rolfmore, I basically need a home for things that are mainly text with some pics and diagrams that probably could live on github wiki pages but trying to share those to non-developers seems to scare people. In particular, my relatives or the part of my friendship group that didn't originate from throwing giant bags full of paper planes at a LAN party.

Topics I am likely to post about:

  • I freelance product and UX, notably where it intersects heavily with regulatory constraints. User safety and regulatory compliance matters deeply to me. I actively get excited when I get to look up laws, or infrastructure. But turns out, I'm pretty good at helping companies make money while keeping compliant. Turns out a lot of other people find this hard and boring so it's a nice niche, but it does mean I might be a pub bore. Sorry. Not sorry. Maybe.
  • I like finding out things I'm not meant to find out about. This is probably why I really did feel at home in infosec, but this is a more broad thing.
  • I'm currently lucky enough to work in the rail sector right now. Woo! Trains! I will share things related to this.
  • I moved from the UK to Portugal (Madeira) in 2020, and that means I've had to navigate the Withdrawal Agreement, immigration booths, self employment, tax, and even silly stuff like "how does one obtain a UK keyboard in Portugal?" So I'll talk about this too. I am not a tax or immigration advisor though, so be careful.
  • My cats, who I share butler duties with my husband for.
  • Shopping for niche things that aren't really technology related but I do struggle to find online resources for.
